シンガポールは、僕が大好きな国の１つだ。

今日は、シンガポールの小学生向けのテスト問題を紹介しよう。
そう、小学生向け（！）だ。
とはいえ、なめるとヤバい。
シンガポールではいろんな民族が入り混じっているので、
みんな、家庭では例えば中国語で会話していても、
学校では英語でコミュニケーションしたりしている。
だから、
めちゃくちゃ英語ができる。
シンガポール人の英語って、聞いたことある？
シングリッシュって呼ばれるんだけど、正直、あまり聞き取りやすい英語じゃない。
それにちょっと方言みたいなのも入ってて、
たとえばOK! っていうところを OK lah! （OKラー、と発音）って言ったりする。
でも、それでもとにかくシンガポール人の友達は、みんなペラペラなのだ。
下の問題は、そのシンガポールで、小６が受ける英語のテスト問題だ。

この文章、まず、単語がけっこう難しい。
それに、単語が何とか分かっても、たくさん英語の文章を読んできた子でないと、
何が適切な語かすぐ出てこない。
逆に、英語に多く触れている子なら、自然に単語が出てくる。
ほんとに？
って感じかもしれないけど、たとえば自己紹介って設定で、
Hi, I'm Kazu. I'm ______ Osaka. Nice to ______ you.
・・・ってきたら、
I'm from Osaka も Nice to meet you も
けっこう無理なく出てくるよね。 これと同じことを、
ちょっとレベルの高い英文でやっている感じだ。
もう１回言っとくけど、これで、小学生が解く問題だ。

文章の難しさとか言う以前に、英語のvocabulary（ボキャブラリー＝知ってる言葉の数）に
差があるなーって感じた人が多いんじゃないかと思う。
シンガポール人と日本人は関係ないじゃん、
って人もいるかもしれないけど、
社会に出て君が一緒に働くのは、
このシンガポール人かもしれないし、
インド人かもしれないし、
そもそも英語ネイティブのアメリカ人かもしれない。
正直、僕もこの問題が小学生向けって知ったときはショックだった。
実際、同じような問題がたくさんあるなかで、
今日選んだ問題は最も簡単なやつだ。
そりゃ、小学生からこれだけ解ければペラペラになるよな、って素直に思う。
でも、高校生からでも別に遅くはない。
というか、高校生ぐらいがギリギリ間に合うチャンスなのかもしれない。
中国人の女の子の迫力に圧倒された話は前に書いたけど（ここ）、
そもそも英語力で負けていたらボコボコだ。
負けないように準備しとこうね。
